Strategy 3: Vocabulary/Frayer Model

Level of Expertise 6
What is the strategy?
The Frayer Model is used to categorize students' understanding of a vocabulary word or concept they are studying.  Students list the definition, characteristics, examples, and non-examples on a chart with four quadrants.  (Alvermann, Phelps, & Gillis, 2010; Billmeyer & Barton, 1998)

Why use this strategy?
Using this strategy helps students develop a conceptual understanding of new vocabulary or concepts.    In this unit, the term slope is "the" concept.   Using this particular graphic organizer helps my students to think about this term in a variety of ways.  It allows them to visually demonstrate what they understand about slope and to categorize their new knowledge.   This can also serve as a great tool for review or as a study aid.

How does it work?
1. Students are familiar with this specific graphic organizer, but I will remind them the importance of carefully thinking about the answers for examples and nonexamples.
2. I will review the type of information included in each quadrant of the Frayer Model.
3. For this particular activity, I will have the students work in pairs.
4. After the students complete the graphic organizer, ask students to share their information with the whole class.
5. When needed, I will ask students to add new information or details to the Frayer Model during this lesson as well as throughout the unit of study.
